1,200 New Trees Planted!

A Successful Summer of Planting and Forest Care in the Ursern Valley

Wald & Klima Ursern looks back on a highly successful summer of planting and forest care. Thanks to the committed support of 170 volunteers, numerous new seedlings were planted and extensive maintenance work was carried out in the Ursern Valley. These joint efforts make an important contribution to the long-term protection and sustainable development of the local forests.

Planting for the Future: Diverse Tree Species for a Healthy Forest Ecosystem
Over the summer, around 1,200 young trees were planted in various areas of the Gurschenwald in Andermatt and the St. Anna Forest in Hospental. The focus was on native species such as Swiss stone pine, larch and spruce to promote the forest’s biodiversity. In addition, future-proof species such as silver fir and sycamore maple were integrated to help the forest adapt to the effects of climate change. Since summer 2022, a total of 4,375 trees have been planted — a milestone for the reforestation project.

Caring for the Forest: Sustainability Through Continuous Maintenance
One of the association’s top priorities is the long-term care of newly planted trees to ensure their survival. A key element is keeping the young trees free from competing vegetation — known locally as “Aussicheln”. By carefully removing surrounding plants, the seedlings get the best possible conditions to thrive in the short growing season — because without sufficient sunlight, there is no growth.

Another important measure is protection against wildlife browsing: Every newly planted tree is provided with protective measures in autumn to safeguard it from wildlife damage. “Planting is just the first step. What really matters is continuous care so that the seedlings can grow strong and healthy,” emphasises Sandy Müller, Managing Director of Wald & Klima Ursern. "Only through intensive maintenance can we ensure the long-term success of our reforestation efforts.”

A Strong Community Project for the Future
The involvement of 170 volunteers shows the great commitment of the local community and highlights how important forest protection is for all of us. “It’s incredibly motivating to see how many people join us in taking action for the forest and the climate,” says Sandy Müller.
